Replace Missing Shelf Knobs
Is anyone else forever losing the little knobs that support the shelves on cheap and/or somewhat less cheap shelving units? (You know the ones, you can get them at Target and WalMart, but never at thrift stores because they never last that long?) Well, I think I have something that could be a quick or long term fix–depending on how many times you want to bend hanger wire. (Yes, I am doing another how-to with hanger wire–I moved and we got “rid” of lots of wire hangers….I smuggled a few to my corner.)
First, find an old wire hanger. Next, pull out one of the shelving knobs. I lucked out, because the knob I was replacing had a plastic cover that I could fit over the bent wire hanger and when I put it in, it was pretty hard to tell that I had even messed with it.
Back to the project, cut the hanger and then measure it against the knob you are replicating. Begin the bend in your wire just short of the length you want–the bend will poke out a bit and make it the right size.
The next part is the hardest–you have to make a second bend that matches the first end (so, there will be a bend and a cut end on each side, with three thicknesses of wire). Again, bend the wire just short of the length you are aiming for.
Also, you may need more or less thicknesses of wire, depending on how large a whole you are trying to fit, so that the real goal–a level shelf that doesn’t dump your stuff on the floor–can be attained.
Last, but not least, if you are as lucky as I was (to find the plastic cap I mentioned before) place the cap on the end, then place in whole and WALA! Your shelf is fixed.
P.S. Does anyone know what the technical name for these knobs is? Shelf-Holder-Upper-Thingies doesn’t sound quite right to me.
