Ancient Junk Creators?
I was thinking about junk and creating things from it the other day (and not just because I like to keep you all informed–mostly, though. I think the ratio is something like 45% ’cause I gotta, 40% ’cause I wanna, and 15% just ’cause.) Anyway, as I was thinking about junk creation, when I began to wonder what sorts of junk creators ancient man had around.
The first thing I can figure is that people wandered around strangling animals for food until someone found a discarded, but sharp, rock, some sort of tendon and a stick, and perhaps thought, “Hmm. Grog, old boy, if you could only hold this sharp thing without slicing off your finger, you’d have an easier time offing that fuzzy creature over there…” (Yes, for some reason, the little cave guy is slightly British–you were expecting Hunnish?)
Maybe his friend sees the new rock-knife and thinks to himself, “Errg. Derg like throttle dinner. Give Derg happy thingies inside. Grog make bad thing–take away happy thingies.” (What? I suppose there have been nay-sayers as long as there have been people.) Luckily Grog’s new idea for taking discarded things catches on and Roerg decides that the old, flat rock out back that he’s been meaning to get rid of could be rounded a bit and used to haul stuff.
Simplistic as this is, I think that Junk Creators have a way of becoming innovators in society. I mean, what normal person would take the skin from an animal and try to reuse it? I figure it was probably someone with the tendencies and instincts of a junk creationist. Keep an eye out through history, you might find one of us!
Don’t be surprised if this post starts something of a “Junk Creation Throughout History” sort of post theme. I just might be tempted bring up people like the guy who started looking into bat guano and came up with some pretty explosive stuff. (Okay, so maybe the last is taking it too far, but it takes all kinds!)
