Antenna Ball!
Above is a foam ball my wife caught while we were at an NBA game. We kept it around the house, and today’s post not only features her foam ball, but is also her idea. (However, the execution is all me, Mwa-ha-ha!)
I would normally post something like this “how to” on a Monday or a Friday, but this one was so easy, I thought that I would put it in the Thursday “Grab Bag” (not that it wouldn’t fit into the Tuesday Grab-Bag just as easily).
I must admit that it surprised me that my wife kept the ball in the first place, but it was even more impressive that she suggested I make into an antenna ball. I don’t know her reasons, exactly, but I think it is an excellent way to show off the fact that the ball chose you over your neighbors (or that you, rather than the teeny-bopper a couple of seats down or the slow guy trying to get a souvenir for his kid, were the one that ran down the aisle, jumped two rows, and caught it mid-air with your teeth–never mind the state of the seating or your body afterward). (All stunts in this blog post are entirely fictional…we aim to entertain!)
Now, to make a too-lengthy blog post end before someone gets hurt (or rotten-tomatoed) the easy part is displaying your trophy of daring-do! First, decide where you want the antenna to enter the ball. (I chose the cross-hairs made by the basketball lines–I couldn’t resist the spot, so many lines meet up there that it almost has to have a hole there!)
Second, make the hole with something sharp–I suggest that if you use a knife, be careful to make a small hole, that way you can always make it larger if the antenna requires it. Mine did. However, if you start with a large hole, you’ll probably only display that proud piece of Americana (wow, am I laying this on thick or what?) for a couple of blocks before it falls off, and the guy who wanted it for his kid gets it anyway.
Third, take the hole, place it on the end of your car antenna, and shove very, very hard. Caution: Too hard will cause the antenna to exit the ball on the other side…not good, unless you want a souvenir shish kabob. If that’s the case then, by all means, shove away. You might also want to push a piece of wire or something equally slender into the ball first, to make a gap that will guide the antenna in. (Antennae, curiously enough, like water, seem to take the path of least resistance.)
In the end, you can display your “free” gift (keep in mind, “caught it mid-air with your teeth”) like so:
