Caboose Cabin
This nifty cabin used to belong on the end of a train. I found this in a section named “Cabin made from an old Caboose.” which is part of the www.waymarking.com website.
If you are having a hard time finding the caboose shape, everything red used to be caboose, everything else is additional.
I’ve seen this caboose from the highway many times over the past 30 years, but never knew until now that it was actually converted into a cabin. I always thought it was simply a caboose displayed just off the highway. When I stopped for photos and coordinates, I realized it’s actual use. There appears to be a large addition to the rear which also carries the old Scenic station sign. The only funny part is that the caboose carries an NP (Northern Pacific) emblem while the railroad was originally the Great Northern Line. The NP crossed the Cascade mountains over 30 miles to the south.
Where do people find old cabooses?

Hobbyists attend railway sell off auctions and trade and re-sell. I can’t believe I knew the answer about where to find an old caboose!
Here in Germany there is a simple living movement where people convert pre-fab builder’s shelters into one-room homes. It’s similar to the railcar homes of the past.

Thanks for the heads-up. I would never have known!
How cool would it be to have such an interesting house–and for less money than a boring one?
(You can’t believe you know how to get old railway cars–and I can’t believe I have a reader in Germany…I guess that makes us even?)

Oh, I wanted one so badly when I was a child. It came from reading The Boxcar Children series. They lived in a boxcar. Then, a little diner nearby was built in a caboose and it made the craving worse. My parents got me a puppy instead.

Funny–I don’t know if I see the connection between a caboose and a puppy. I suppose owners are always paying attention to the end of both…
Do you still want to live in some portion of a train? The coal car, perhaps?
