Candy Wrapper Flower(s)

by Joshua Johnson on July 23rd, 2007

Not one, not two, but three different candy wrappers made into flowers.

This post is mostly about taking candy wrappers and performing some not-so-tricky origami on them. I know that most of the time we focus on what’s inside the wrapper (okay, I focus on the candy inside)–but if you find a particularly cool looking one–say from Japan or Mexico or somewhere exotic (like Hershey, PA?) save it, make a flower out of it, and give it to someone special. They might think it’s unique and date you? (Not that I am making any promises here, there are other factors at work–we both know that, I think.)

First, I was going to explain how to make a lily type flower (the four-pointed variety)–but it turns out that it will be much easier for you to go to go to the lily article at OrigamInstrucions.com. Who knows…you may end up making an Orbitz earthworm. (My goodness, the only animal more ironic to create from an Orbitz wrapper is perhaps a dung beetle…)

Here are the materials I used to make the lily variations. If there is interest, I may post my favorite variation on the lily origami pattern–the three-pointed lily. If I get a comment requesting instructions, I’ll post instructions (or maybe I’ll do it later on).

Here’s what these were made from

It’s also good to keep in mind that the instructions I sent you to use a large piece of paper for their lily–I am suggesting you use a very small piece of paper. See below to give you an idea of the size of these things:

Get a load of my sausage fingers squishing the delicate foil paper. Ah, the carnage, oh!

I even found some amazing instructions on how to make your own origami chess set! You could have Hershey’s and Nestlé’s duke it out on opposite sides!!!…okay, perhaps not, but it was a thought. (Instructions are in .PDF format, you will need Adobe Acrobat to open and use them.)

The idea of giving somebody a flower has always been sweet. This just takes it one step furter.
