Celebratory Newspaper Hats

by Joshua Johnson on July 6th, 2007

(Picture Pending…Work just gets in the way of making stuff!)

Before I get on with today’s post, I’d like to thank whoever referred to my blog as “Dumpster Divers Anonymous.” It’s perfect! Not only is there a hint of sarcasm, but it fits so well.

Now, on to today’s project. For those of us in the United States and Canada this last week was one of celebration…so I have decided to show you how to make the paper hats my family used to celebrate Independence Day (United States) when I was growing up.

First, find your favorite part of an old newspaper (or just grab a couple of sheets) but you only need two thicknesses or so–these aren’t for keeping the rain off.

Next, fold all your thicknesses the way they were when the newspaper was closed. Then, take the folded corner at the top left and fold it into the middle (I like to fold it so it rests about an inch or two from center) and then repeat with the top right folded corner. (Don’t do this upside down, you won’t be able to get your head inside the hat, unless yours is shaped like a very narrow cylinder.)

Now for the last two steps, fold half of the sheets up from the bottom until the crease they create rests on the edge of the folded parts from the top. Turn the “hat” over and crease the other half of the paper(s) so that this crease is even with the other on the bottom. Now, the hat is technically done, but I like to make it harder for the hat to pop open, so I just fold the edges of the bottom part over the diagonal crease from the top and tape them down. This makes the hat a bit more stable, but is not always necessary.

Now, when you put these on, you will look…magnificent…?
