Every-thing’s Got History
I thought about putting in another interesting web site that features some junk creator here, but I was looking back, and the “Grab Bag” posts seem to have become a secondary “Weekend Webpage” category. So (at least for today) I’ll dispense with the other people, and try to ramble on about something worthwhile–assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that you all are looking for original content and not regurgitated remains of what someone else has possibly already posted in the past few weeks.
I wonder, as I look around at the plethora of stuff on my desk, how many people actually see what their things are made from? Have you ever noticed the textures and shapes? Have you ever thought about the history involved in any given piece of equipment or entertainment? Something as simple as a candle has centuries of history! Think of the people that discovered how to make string from the fibers, the others that figured out how to use beeswax to coat the string (obviously simplifying quite a bit, here), someone found a way to use tallow instead of beeswax, and recently–to put a new spin on it–my sister made candles that looked like drinks in a cup–out of some sort of gel wax.
So, next time you look around you, look past the physical item and think about the history of any given item you own–there’s more there than you think, probably because you haven’t been thinking 4th dimensionally–to steal Doc Brown’s* phrase.
*Doc Brown is a doctor from the Back to the Future movie trilogy–my favorite of which is #3.
