Glorious Gourd Decorating

by Peggy on May 6th, 2008

gourd-book.jpegThis lovely book on all things gourd decorating was written by Mickey Baskett. I found my copy of Glorious Gourd Decorating at the library, but it’s also available online.

I’ve never seen a gourd purse in real life, but this book tells you how to make one. Other items you can learn to make from gourds include bowls, baskets, sculptures, birdhouses, clocks, luminaries, vessels, boxes, ornament trees and centerpieces. Pretty amazing. I never realized our gourd friends were that versatile.

Glorious Gourd Decorating also explains how to grow, choose, dry, clean and cut your gourds. There’s not much it doesn’t cover. Many patterns are included. You just bring your gourds and tools to the party.

Have you ever tried gourd decorating?

I have one of these that someone gave to me as a gift about 20 years ago. He made a nativity scene with all of the figures. Really nice and unusual.

Rosemary, the book didn’t include any gourd nativity scenes. That’s a new one, but maybe I’m just not up with the gourd scene. : ) I would like to try this some time, but I’d have to buy one. No space to grow a gourd right now.

Yes, I’ve done gourd art. It’s really fun to take something so ordinary and make something beautiful or useful from it.

I’ve written a series of how-to articles for the Artful Crafter here:

I’ve never gotten into actually doing gourd art, but I have often admired pieces by various artists. Maybe it’ll go on my “someday” list! :-)

There are a lot of dollmakers who use gourds. The growing season is too short here to successfully grow gourds, but maybe when we move to a warmer climate…. yes!

Thanks Eileen. I’ll check out your link. I could use some how-to gourd articles : )

Cyndi, something tells me you could make some cool gourd art.

Noreen, I’m trying to picture the doll gourds. I’m guessing they look a bit like wooden dolls. I have the warm weather for gourds, just no land right now. Maybe I can talk my parents into growing some for me.

Gourd decorating reminds me of some of the crafts of my childhood and then with my daughter.
