Hand-Made Original
I think it is interesting how what’s popular in society is generally traced most easily by a pendulum. For instance: Bellbottoms were out, then in the middle of last century they were all of a sudden in, then out, then in…and hopefully they’re on their way out. (I apologize to any bellbottom fans out there, feel free to comment and let us all know how awesome they are…I am open to enlightenment on their awesomeness.)
I think the same sort of pendulum trend exists with hand-made goods. Originally they were in because there was no other choice. Then, along came the industrial revolution, and mass production was in because the stuff cost less and it was new. For a long time now, it seems, there has been a swinging back and forth–handmade is more expensive, but had aesthetic qualities and human value. But, on the other side of the coin, (coin, pendulum…it’s my blog, I can mix metaphors as much as I want…) Wal-Mart and so many other places can get me products for less money than I can make them–not to mention that they save me time in the process.
When is home-made better, than saving money or time, or perhaps both? Well, if you are like me, it is worth more when I can say things like, “Oh, yeah, I made that.” or, “Honey, don’t buy that, I can make one of those with this, or this adjustment and it would be better than that one.”
Hand-made can mean more than original; it can also mean a better design or more personal touch.
