Inexpensive Press Board
Anyone who has ever priced press board (having written that, I admit to being the only one I know who has even considered it) knows that it is not inexpensive.
Do not despair! For those who want pressboard on a small scale (such as for book covers or smaller things) you need look only as far as your local library. Some libraries don’t mind if, after they get rid of their broken and/or unused books via their dumpster, you rummage around for what you can carry off. Note, the term “dumpster diving” is a popular one, but it gives the wrong impression (albeit a comical and lighthearted one) about dumpsters.
**WARNING**BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN LOOKING INTO DUMPSTERS!!! SOME DUMPSTERS ARE DEATH TRAPS–THEY CAN HAVE SHREDDING OR COMPRACTING MECHANISMS!!! NEVER EVER EVER EVER PUT YOUR ENTIRE SELF INTO ONE!!!!**WARNING**
After completing preliminary study of the dumpster to make certain it is safe (and rereading the previous paragraph–perhaps chanting it as a mantra–you will be looking for book covers that did not get bent from their fall into the dumpster and/or misuse by library patrons. If the old cover has tobacco burns, tomato sauce, oils, or any sort of ground-in problems it is officially junk, unless someone can prove other-wise! (This is, of course a “junk creation” site, I am open to disputation of my statements.)
