Knives and Shovels and Junk, Oh My!
Those who know me well know that I have a weakness for blacksmithing and for handmade knives in particular.
I found a site the other day that deals blacksmithing and home knifemaking–and a particular post that deals with handmade knives: Old-Timer’s Knives. (The picture also comes from this post.) The main blog that this post is taken from is called Primitive Point.
While I don’t recommend making knives from shovels (the carbon content in the steel isn’t high enough to hold an edge well) I am impressed at the look and “feel” of the knives above.
One thing that I may have mentioned (and that bears re-mentioning, if I have) is that one of the most impressive things about home forging is that, if you are creative, you will almost never have to pay for materials. Useable scrap metal is just a junk yard away.
If I remember, later, I’ll tell you about the knife I designed and almost finished. (Wait while I wipe away a tear.) Then I lost it.
