Microfiber Flash Drive Case
Today, I feature a handy little carrying case for your portable Flash Drive (also referred to as a “stick” or “thumb” drive).
I came up with the idea for this case after I broke the portion of my drive that was supposed to hold it to my keychain. If your flash drive is like mine, that piece looks designed to break. To fix, or avoid this problem, you can use leather, or (as I did) you can find a discarded microfiber iPod case on the ground after a snow drift melts.
Once you have the materials you plan on using, measure your flash drive\’s length, width, and height. You can use these measurements to create your own case.
First, trace your drive onto a piece of paper larger than your drive. Then measure and mark the width on both sides of your tracing. Next, extend your lines from the bottom, so that you double everything in length (this will allow you to fold the material and sew it, later on. Finally, draw a line approximately .5 inches inside the patter from your length–otherwise it will be difficult to get your thumb drive out of the case!
Now, add around .25 inches to the “seam” edge, to allow for sewing along the pattern. Also, add a rounded triangular piece to the top of one “length” in the pattern. Sew along dotted line. (I found it easiest to sew this on a sewing machine.)
Once this is finished, insert a hole in the top of the triangular piece (do not put the hole too close to the edge, or there will be no point in making this case–it will break as easily as your stick drive alone). (I use a leather punch.) Once the hole is made, insert an eyelet (I used a leather eyelet, the kit to put it in cost me about 9 USD).
Now you can enjoy the piece of mind that comes not only from keeping your information on your key ring (instead of where ever it snaps off) AND of using something you found on the ground to make something useful!
