Junk Creation

Minerals and Junk Creation

by Joshua Johnson on January 3rd, 2008

A while ago, I posted about crude oil, and how it is a junk creation, of one sort or another.  I have been thinking along those same lines for today’s post–for instance: Where will people go to for minerals in the coming centuries?

My best guess is that they will go to the landfills and garbage dumps that speckle Europe and North America’s disposable society.  Imagine, if you will, 10 or so feet of dirt over your local garbage dump.  Now, imagine that it gets compacted and more, say 10 feet, of dirt is piled on top.  After a while (a LONG while) the stuff in the dump will mesh and create a great source of minerals for anyone that wants to mine it.

Makes you wonder how the minerals we mine get to where we mined them…

Hm, so someone will one day benefit from all that coal I keep getting in my stockings. :-)

Interesting idea! I suppose that if we follow the same train of thought, the coal you get will eventually become diamonds…Santa doesn’t bring anyone a bad gift, at least not if you look far enough into the 4th dimension, eh?

I wish Santa would bring me the diamonds, though, instead of the starter version.

I think the sam Santa visits both of us–mine always seems to bring the version of something that has a “do it yourself” feel to it…

Does he know me or what?
