Mister Skunk’s Magnificent Creations

by Peggy on July 1st, 2008

Mister Skunk isn’t just a nickname. This Massachusetts artist is legally changing his name to Mister Skunk this month. Friends and family have already been calling him Skunk for years. The name refers to the artist’s habit of “skunking” for interesting trash — a hobby that affords him the opportunity to meet interesting animals that are also rummaging. Read more at The Wicked Local.

If you live in Boston, you’re lucky.

You can see Mister Skunk’s exhibit at Space 242 until July 18. If you don’t live in the beautiful city of Boston, then you’ll have to settle with my post for now. I’ve got some great images for you, though.

As may be obvious, Skunk creates his robots and toy guns from reclaimed bicycle parts and trash. The metal sculptures are meant to blur the line between art and toys. In the Space 242 exhibit article, Skunk says, “I want people to give up the ridiculous notion that playing is something only kids should do.”

Now, let’s meet some of Skunk’s toys.

The last one is “Hathor” — Skunk’s favorite of the bunch he’s created so far, though she might be a little dangerous to play with.

What you would guess is Skunk’s trade by day?

I like the two figures in the middle photograph. They are like battle mechs or something (roleplaying game). Very cool, I would love to own one. -Ed

Hi Ed. It does appear that the figure on the left is hovering and the one on the right is ready to take a swing. But he’d better watch out. The figure on the left was many more weapons!

    Skunk, huh?

My son John’s friends have been calling him Sal for years and I still struggle with that.

I wonder what “Skunk’s” folks think.

Anyway, I love his whimsical creations!

Eileen, I don’t think the name Skunk is the only unique thing about this guy. I believe his parents are probably fine with it. ; )

Is anyone going to guess what he does for a living?

Is he a lawyer? Or maybe an engineer.

Oh WOW! I absolutely LOVE Skunk’s work!
I think that he’s probably a welder or some kind of metal worker by day. His technical prowess is superb, so I am willing to bet that he’s working with metal during the day :o)

Noreen, yes he works with metal, making custom bikes. The wicked local link in my post explains more.

Fascinating creations! I’ll have to show this to my grandson. He collects “junk” and is intrigued by robots.
