Retail Junk Creations: Are You Sold?

by Peggy on April 3rd, 2008

bingo-clock2.jpgTilt your head a little to the right, then scroll down. Do the hokey pokey. Fine, I’ll stop. Just look at the new Junk Creation poll. It’s in the sidebar.

Why this poll about your feelings on retail junk creations?

First, let me explain what “retail junk creations” means. A retail junk creation might be a bracelet made out of a repurposed candy wrapper, like at Endangered Species Chocolate. Or it could be a handbag made out of used tires like at Hardware by Renee. This bingo clock from Uncommon Goods is made of reclaimed wood with vintage bingo cards. It’s a perfect example.

These items aren’t going to save the world, but it can be inspiring to see how others have come up with a new use for items that have lived their intended lives. Of course, the recycled item being sold should be useful, or at least desired. I’m against making something out of used materials just for the sake of having something recycled to sell.

A good retail junk creation should take the place of something new someone would buy. Otherwise, it’s energy wasted. Those recycled goods still have to be shipped. And most retail junk creations use some virgin materials as well. Personal junk creations are different. They aren’t produced in larger numbers, and hopefully you’ll end up liking what you make. You don’t have to worry about selling it to someone else.

Since I’d like to feature retail junk creations on this blog, I want to know what you think about them.

I’ll leave the poll up until the end of the month, so let the question whirl around your head a bit. But please do take the poll at some point in April.

Well, I guess we’re in the “retail junk business” then, since we make jewelry from recycled Scrabble game tiles. We just started so hopefully everything goes really well :)
