Junk Creation

Reuse CDs and Records

by Joshua Johnson on June 30th, 2007

What’re these big black CD things? I haven’t got any use for them…or have I?Dang! I can’t believe I forgot to burn that part. This CD is useless, now…or is it?

This weekend, I’m featuring the site that inspired yesterday’s post. It’s called Prime Time Together Crafts by Donna Erickson

(if the link didn’t work, try pasting this address into your web browser:

This article has several fun activities to do with kids…though I am uncertain how many kids really ought to be putting non-food items in the oven. I can imagine bad things happening. (”Bad Things” really ought to be capitallized. I mean, something that could include kids loading anything from their favoriet blanket to Fluffy the cat into their ovens, there ought to be at least capital letters and perhaps a bold and/or itallic in there.)

The coolest part is in the middle, sort of hidden in plain sight–how to melt and reshape old records and CDs. I loved it–I mean, how many times have you burned a CD, only to find that it wasn’t how you wanted it? Then it’s a total loss, right? Not anymore!

I have not tried it yet, but I do have an idea for them that makes the hole in the middle useful, instead of just something to find a way to plug.

Happy Melting!

    Josh,
I am curious on what I can do with old film canisters. For some reason, I have a bunch of these.

Also, back in college, we melted a bunch of old records to make bowls for taco salads … with an old 50’s theme. It really worked out well.

About your college “junk creation” days…I am glad that someone knows if they are safe to eat out of! The instructions on Erikson’s post mentioned a “well ventilated” area, which made me nervous to eat from the bowls, but not anymore!

As far as old film cannisters–which kind? I pictured the old tin/steel cans used for the movie reels, but I suppose you really meant old 55mm film cans made from plastic?

Let me know–I’ll plan on the plastic film cans in the next couple of weeks.

Melt albums!!! I don’t know; I guess I’d rather see them melted into something clever than sitting in a landfill. But, I have a hard time letting go of albums I don’t like — now CDs sure melt away.

Very interesting… On another blog I write I recently wrote about how to make coasters and wind chimes out of used CDs. But that was a one time deal. It looks like fun to write about this stuff all of the time.

    I enjoy it!

Speaking of melting CDs…I got an AOL CD today that’s not going to be round and disk-like for long!

My first thought was for containers–coins, beads–but that’s too boring an answer, let me ruminate on it a bit.

Found a use (and a strange one) for film canisters…Christmas light covers!

People just used cds as decorations at home or hung them from the rear-view mirror in their cars in Chicago.

My daughter and I made bowls from albums a few months ago, and it was great! We picked them up at a thrift store for practically nothing. She uses hers to keep her larger pieces of costume jewelry. Makes a very nice conversational piece.
At the end of your post you said
“I have not tried it yet, but I do have an idea for them that makes the hole in the middle useful, instead of just something to find a way to plug.”
    Did you ever try it?

I haven’t just yet, but your comment reminded me that I was planning on it!

Just so you know, I was thinking of pots for plants–that way the water would have a place to go, just like the ceramic sort.

Thank you. I had hoped to have the time (and a record) to try it out. Time seems to have gotten away from me. Where ARE my priorities?
