Thinking Spring and Lawn Mowing

I know that we are in the grips of winter–but I’m in a spring-y mood today. So we’re going to talk about lawn clippings. (Don’t be surprised if this post gets linked or copied wholesale in the spring.)
I have done professional lawn care for years, and one funny thing that people seem to misunderstand is that mulching your lawn is actually good for it. I recall (I’d like to say with fondness, but it is more like with annoyance) people who were adamant that we needed to bag their lawn clippings so that they wouldn’t cause “thatch” to build up in their lawn and kill it. Let me ease your minds–the lawns that we caught the grass looked exactly the same as the ones who let us mulch. AND, this means that we didn’t have to find a place to dump the clippings. Is mulching similar to junk creation? You be the judge.
The BIG difference that the mulching made was in how long it took us to mow the lawn. The same is true of using your little mower at home. If you mulch, by this I mean you purchase a blade that is designed to cut the grass more than once before it hits the grass again, you will save yourself time, and you will be adding nutrients to the soil your grass uses to eat. Granted, if you just don’t put the bag on the mower, it will still mulch, but it may not hide the clippings as well.
Anyway, think Spring! (Maybe we can get it to come a little quicker?)
